5 Ingredient Sweet Green Breakfast Smoothie
With only five ingredients this ultra creamy smoothie is easy to whip up for breakfast even on busy days. The banana and almond milk add sweetness while the Greek yogurt and peanut butter provide a blast of satiating protein to hold you over until lunch. You can easily double (or triple!) the recipe to serve a crowd.
- Prep Time: 5 Minutes
- Total Time: 5 Minutes
- Yield: 1 Cup 1x
- Category: Drink
- Method: Blender
- Cuisine: American
- 1 ripe, medium size banana
- 2 cups spinach
- 1/3 cup Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- Combine all of the ingredients in a blender.
- Blend on high for 1 minute or until no chunks of spinach leaves remain.
- Serve immediately.
- Too Thick? – I love a really thick smoothie but if you can’t handle it, add more almond milk as needed.
- Spinach Only Please – I recommend not substituting other greens for the spinach. I’ve found kale to be too chewy, lettuce to be too watery, and most other greens to add an odd flavor. I have not tried this recipe with frozen spinach but suspect it won’t turn out as creamy.
- Serve Immediately – The smoothie may separate if left in the fridge too long so make it just in time (which is easy since it whips up so fast).

This Recipe’s Roots
One summer during college I lived at home with my parents and interned at a company a 1.5 hour drive away. (Long commutes with Massachusetts traffic especially suck by the way and I don’t recommend them.) The first few weeks of work I skipped breakfast because I was irrationally terrified of being late. Fortunately I consistently managed to arrive on time but unfortunately my low blood sugar consistently contributed to Massachusetts road rage stereotypes.
After one particularly irritable morning on the road I made it a priority to eat breakfast before I left the house for work. I wanted something filling, healthy, and that could help slim down the freshman (and sophomore) 15 I’d managed to put on. Most importantly I wanted something I could make and eat fast.
That’s when I discovered the pinnacle of efficient breakfast foods.
The power smoothie.
It took me a while to fine tune the ingredients to get a truly smooth texture (so many smoothies don’t deserve the name) but once I discovered spinach was the key it was… smooth sailing.
Five simple ingredients, five minutes, and I was ready to high five the day away. (Meanwhile my poor parents were subjected to blender sounds every morning at 5 a.m. for six months. Love you Mom and Dad!)
Taking a Closer Look
Smoothies really are one of the simplest things you can make. Literally take whatever ingredients you want, combine them in the blender, then hit the power button and watch the magic happen.
This particular smoothie, full of fresh spinach, comes out a beautiful shade of green. I don’t have a fancy blender but you really don’t need one for this recipe. Unlike some other greens (*cough* kale *cough*), spinach easily blends into a lump free consistency.
What I Like Most About This Recipe
It’s a tie between the creamy texture and the fact that it actually fills me up. I’ve had a lot of smoothies that are grainy or chewy or leave me hungry an hour later. I’m sure you have too.
These simple five ingredients (banana, spinach, Greek yogurt, peanut butter, and almond milk) are a magical combination. Rich tasting but surprisingly well balanced from a nutrition perspective.
You know you’re doing something right when your smoothie glass looks like this after you’ve finished drinking it:
This smoothie recipe is one of the easiest ways to boost your leafy green intake. Speaking from personal experience, kids love it too. It’s literally a meal in a glass and there are months where I voluntarily drink it every day without getting bored.
It was just too good not to share. Please enjoy what I hope will be your new go to power breakfast!
